Medical Basix offers a variety of exceptional educational and training programs at various community colleges and other locations throughout the area.

Our signature course is the MEDICAL BILLING & CODING PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM.

This 200-hour course, available as a daytime or evening session, meets twice a week for approximately 6 months.

This course covers the medical billing process in depth, including insurance terminology, medical coding systems, HIPAA, government and private payer health care claims, general insurance procedures, completion of official claim forms (CMS-1500 and UB-04) for claims submission, claims follow-up, processing payments/EOBs, how to appeal, handle denials and create patient statements.

Utilization of computerized medical billing software in class will offer a unique “hands-on” experience.

This is an excellent course for beginners as well as for those already working in the health care setting who want to expand their knowledge and may be thinking about pursuing professional certification.

The coding portion of this course introduces the basic principles of CPT, HCPCS and ICD-9- CM coding, illustrates the application of these principles with examples and exercises based on actual documentation, and teaches the student how to analyze clinical data for the purpose of coding and reimbursement. Basic anatomy and medical terminology are also introduced. All sections of the CPT manual (Evaluation & Management, Anesthesia, Surgery, Radiology, Pathology/Lab, Medicine, category II & III codes, Modifiers and other Appendices), HCPCS and ICD-9-CM volumes I, II and III manuals will be covered, as well as tools for evaluating quality, guidelines for preparing an internal audit, critical information on fraud and abuse and a discussion of compliance. ICD-10 will also be discussed. Students will learn how to locate appropriate service and diagnosis codes using coding manuals. Coding using electronic coding tools will also be discussed.

All required textbooks and coding manuals will be included in the cost of this course.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be prepared for an entry-level position doing medical billing or coding in a medical office setting and those with appropriate, additional experience may be prepared to sit for the entry-level national certification exam.

Note: Individuals interested in becoming a Medical Coder or pursuing national certification should have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Some national medical coding certification exams are very complex and may require at least 6 months to 2 years of practical coding experience prior to taking the exam.
